LUZ INTERRUPTUS is an anonymous artistic group which carries out urban interventions in public spaces. Light is their raw material, darkness their canvas. Known for their arresting street work in Madrid, they have been especially commissioned by Spain NOW! 2013 to create a piece for London’s urban context, to be unveiled on 16th October.
Originating from the two separate disciplines of art and photography, the group leave lights on in their sculptures throughout the city, for us to switch off. Starting out on the streets of Madrid at the end of 2008, they used the idea to highlight problems in the capital that seemed to go unnoticed by authorities and the public.
But not everything they do is subversive. Sometimes their light sculptures are purely to embellish or draw attention to forgotten places, mysterious corners or objects left on the streets, who knows why, and by who knows whom, in which they perceive extraordinary artistic value. All this, with their primary inspiration: light. Besides providing a great visual impact, light allows them to make these ‘interventions’ to greater and lesser degrees. They refrain from ruining street furniture and leave room for other artists to work in those common spaces – a rarity in major cities.
These interventions are extremely short lived, disappearing in less than an hour: small, fleeting gifts for passers by to stumble upon.
They are currently working on a piece for the Durham Lumiere Festival.
